About Mount Ayr
When Ringgold County went looking for a permanent seat in 1855, after false starts at Avon and Urbana, settlers picked a rise of high prairie and named it for Ayr, the Scottish town where Robert Burns was born, adding 'Mount' because it sat on the highest ground around. The courthouse square grew up first: a log courthouse in 1856 lost to a tornado, a frame one after it, a towered brick building begun after an 1889 Thanksgiving Day fire, and finally the plain red-brick courthouse of 1927 that still anchors downtown. In 1895 a local brickmason built a sturdy two-story jail a block east, later home to the American Legion and now shops. A Carnegie grant in 1915 gave the town its Renaissance Revival library on West Monroe Street, which opened in January 1917 and still lends books and keeps a genealogy room. Today about 1,600 people live here, with the county hospital, the Princess Theater, Judge Lewis Park and its pool, and the Mount Ayr Raiders drawing families from across Ringgold County.
