About Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon started as Pinhook, a resting place for travelers on the old Military Road between Dubuque and Iowa City, and took the name of George Washington's estate when it was platted in 1847. Its real foundation came in 1853, when Methodists opened a seminary on the hill that soon became Cornell College, and the railroad's arrival in 1859 filled First Street with new trade. The whole town sits on a paha, a long ridge of wind-blown sand and loess left from the ice ages, with the college crowning one end and the brick storefronts of Uptown lining the other. Neighbors still look up to King Memorial Chapel, built of yellow Stone City limestone and finished in 1882, its clock tower rising 130 feet above the campus. Today about 4,500 people call it home, and every May the Uptown streets close so hundreds of artists can cover the pavement in chalk.
