About Moville
Moville takes its name from a town in County Donegal, Ireland: John B. McDermott, born there, kept the area's first post office in his family's home starting in 1868, and he and his wife Martha gave the settlement the name of his birthplace, said MOH-vil. A town lot company filed the plat at the Woodbury County courthouse in 1887, and residents voted to incorporate two years later. Neighbors kept adding the places that hold a town together: a Main Street park with a pavilion in 1916, a library started by the Moville Woman's Club in 1929 that grew into the headquarters of the Woodbury County Library, and a chamber of commerce in 1955. People love the Meadows, a hilly nine-hole course whose clubhouse is a 1917 draft-horse barn, along with Memorial Park on the hill by the pool and the flagpole that marks Main Street. Today about 1,700 people live here, about 15 miles east of Sioux City, home to Woodbury Central's Wildcats, the Woodbury County Fair every year and Moville Days in early June.
