About Mullen

Mullen was laid out in 1888 when the railroad pushed out into the Nebraska Sandhills, and it took its name from Charles Mullen, a Burlington railroad clerk. Hooker County has no other settlement, so Mullen became the county seat at once and finished its first courthouse in 1889. The village incorporated in 1907, and the present courthouse on Cleveland Avenue is on the National Register of Historic Places. About 500 people live here today, ringed by grass hills, the Middle Loup River and a September grouse hunt that has drawn hunters for over thirty years. Mullen Public Schools, the Broncos, anchor the winter and fall calendar.
