About Murray

Murray began in the 1870s a few miles inland from the Rock Bluffs steamboat landing, when the Presbyterian congregation hauled its church building by wagon to a crossroads on land James Walker donated. The settlement was first called Fairview, then took the name of Rev. George Reed Murray, the church's first resident pastor, when its post office opened in 1884. The Missouri Pacific railroad reached the platted townsite in 1891, tying it to Union, Plattsmouth and Omaha. A 1927 fire took about half the businesses, yet the village rebuilt, incorporated in 1935 and organized its own volunteer fire department. Today about 480 people live along Nebraska Highway 1, some 25 miles south of Omaha.
