About Nashua
Nashua grew up where the Cedar River gave settlers strong water power: John Hall built the first frame house here in 1854, and a town platted the next year went by Bridgeport and then Woodbridge before the Greeley brothers renamed it for their hometown of Nashua, New Hampshire. When the Illinois Central branch line arrived in 1868, business drained out of nearby Bradford and into Nashua, which soon had mills, a woolen factory, a busy creamery and a fairgrounds that has hosted the Big Four Fair since 1900. A 1916 dam and power plant turned the river into Cedar Lake, and when the dam failed and the lake dried up in the 1980s, residents and friends raised money to rebuild it, celebrating the refilled lake in 1990 with the first Water Over the Dam Days. Just east of town stands the Little Brown Church in the Vale, the 1864 Congregational church that inspired the hymn "The Church in the Wildwood" and has hosted tens of thousands of weddings. Today about 1,550 people call Nashua home, with a Carnegie library on Brasher Street, Cannon Park looking out over the lake, and the Nashua-Plainfield Huskies in town.
