North 24th Street is the historic heart of Black Omaha: its first Black church in 1865, Nebraska’s first Black legislator, the Omaha Star, and the Dreamland Ballroom, where Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Omaha’s own Preston Love played. Bertha Calloway’s Great Plains Black History Museum keeps the story.
