About Nebraska City
Nebraska City grew up on the west bank of the Missouri River, where John Boulware's ferry carried travelers across from Iowa and steamboats unloaded freight bound west by wagon train. A young newspaperman, J. Sterling Morton, arrived with his bride Caroline in 1854, bought 160 acres here the next year, and began planting trees on the open prairie. In 1872 he proposed a tree-planting day to the state board of agriculture, and on that first Arbor Day, April 10, Nebraskans set out an estimated one million trees. His home, Arbor Lodge, grew from a four-room frame house into a 52-room mansion ringed by orchards and some 270 kinds of trees and shrubs, and the town still marks Arbor Day with a parade and festival each spring.
