About Neligh
In 1872 John D. Neligh, a brick maker from West Point, followed the Elkhorn River into Antelope County, liked what he saw, and bought the land for a town; it was laid out and named for him in 1873. He set right to work on a brick flour mill and a dam across the river, and the mill was grinding wheat, corn and buckwheat by 1874. It switched from millstones to steel rollers in 1886, ran the town's electric power for years, and kept making flour until 1952; today it is the Neligh Mill State Historic Site, still standing by the river beside a 1910 truss bridge. The Cowboy Trail now follows the Elkhorn right through town, past the mill and the campsites at Riverside Park.
