About Nelson

Nelson began in October 1872, when land owned by Horatio Nelson Wheeler was named the Nuckolls County seat and took his middle name. It became a village in 1883 and a second-class city in 1909, and its place as county seat survived a challenge from Superior in 1889. The classical revival courthouse of 1890 still anchors the town and is on the National Register. Downtown, a row of life-size carved sandstone faces and two owls, added to the Stansbury building in 1899, has kept visitors guessing about who they portray. Today about 450 neighbors share Harbine Park, a pool and a nine-hole course.
