About New Hampton
New Hampton got its start around 1855, and one of its founders named it for his hometown of New Hampton, New Hampshire. Sitting near the middle of Chickasaw County, it took the county seat away from Bradford in 1857 and then held onto it through a disputed vote over a tampered poll book, settled in the courts. When the courthouse burned in 1880, townspeople saved the records and put up $5,000 of their own money for a new one, and the Bedford stone courthouse built in 1929 and 1930 still anchors the town today. In 1909 Andrew Carnegie paid for a library after residents voted for it 515 to 194, and that building now lives on as the Carnegie Cultural Center, a museum on North Water Avenue. Every June, the second full weekend brings Heartland Days, a festival of music, food, a parade and fireworks that the Chamber keeps free for all ages.
