About New London
New London started in 1833 as Dover, named for Abraham C. Dover, an Illinois settler who put up the first log cabin on the prairie of eastern Henry County. Schooling followed almost at once: a log school by 1844, a private brick Academy in the town park by 1872, and in 1880 a public meeting where the blacksmith ran in still wearing his apron and a department store closed so its clerks could vote for a new school, which passed by three votes. Along Main Street, McClellan's General Store of 1867 was the town's first Italianate building, and John Peterson's 1908 glove and mitten factory later became a creamery and is now home to the Dover Historical Society's museum. Generous neighbors built the rest: H.J. Nugen left his estate for a public library that opened in 1938, and a 1937 high school with an art deco auditorium still serves the New London Tigers. Today about 1,900 people live here, under a sky-blue water tower that spells out NEW LONDON, with a city park and bandstand, a volunteer fire department that grew from 1890 bucket brigades, and a Veterans Memorial Park dedicated in 2014.
