About New Sharon
New Sharon dates to 1856, when Edward Quaintance put up the first building on the prairie of Mahaska County. It sits about a dozen miles north of Oskaloosa, with Grinnell to the north and Pella to the west, and the town describes itself as way out in the middle of everywhere. The library began in 1915 as a project of the New Sharon Women's Club, opening with 600 books, and years later neighbors famously passed books hand to hand down a line of townspeople to carry them to a new building. Folks still point to the water tower that rises over U.S. 63 and the downtown bandstand, which a local artist worked into a stained glass panel for the town's 150th birthday in 2006. Today about 1,300 people call it home, and children head to North Mahaska schools right next door.
