About Newman Grove
Newman Grove grew up along Shell Creek, where a Scotsman named Johnny Bloomfield lived in a dugout through the 1860s before Lewis Warren's family arrived in 1864 and planted a stand of cottonwoods on their homestead. Young Newman Warren died at 21, and his father sold the land for the town site and pushed to have the place named for him; some of those first cottonwoods still shade today's City Park and golf course. When the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad came through in 1886, settlers moved the town up to higher ground, the streets were platted, and Newman Grove was incorporated on February 9, 1888, with a little over 200 people. It reached about 1,260 residents in the 1920s, and the brick Trinity Lutheran Church on 8th Street (1926) and the small brick city hall on Hale Avenue (1931) date from those years. Today about 670 people live here, and summer brings Shell Creek Valley Days, with a walking trail, pool, campground and Fireman's Ballpark gathering everyone near the old grove.
