About Nora Springs
Nora Springs began in 1857 as Woodstock, a mill settlement on a grove above the Shell Rock River, where more than a hundred springs once bubbled and a glacier-dropped granite boulder marked the spot. A mill-owning newcomer offered to improve the town if it took the name Elnora, and the compromise with a founder who wanted plain 'Springs' gave the town the name it keeps today. When two railroads laid track a few blocks south, shops drifted toward Hawkeye Avenue and the original waterfront became 'Old Town.' The millpond, dam and millrace survive as a city park with a mile-long loop trail, and a pedestrian bridge opened over the river in December 2018 to tie the two sides together. Each last week of June, Buffalo Days brings a parade, a 5K and a fireman's ball to Boulder Park beneath the old water tower. Today about 1,400 people live here, eight miles east of Mason City, and Central Springs schools run their middle school in town.
