About North Bend
North Bend started on the Fourth of July in 1856, when a party of Scottish families bound for Kansas stopped at the northernmost bend of the Platte River, joined a holiday celebration, and decided to stay. Its spot on the old Platte River Road brought the Union Pacific through in 1866, and the railroad and townsfolk settled on the name North Bend after the bend surveyors had long marked on their maps. A village by 1876 and a city ten years later, the town later saw the Lincoln Highway roll down what is now Platte River Road. The brick Carnegie library on East 8th Street, dedicated in 1913, still stands, and so do the five bronze service members of Veterans Park at Ninth and Main. Today about 1,300 people call it home, gathering each June for the Old Settlers celebration, cheering on the North Bend Central Tigers, and heading half a mile south to the Platte for airboat rides and sandbar picnics.
