This week in O'Neill
About O'Neill
O'Neill takes its name from General John O'Neill, an Irish-born Civil War veteran who in 1874 led Irish families out of crowded eastern cities to this spot in the Elkhorn Valley, and in 1969 the governor proclaimed it the Irish Capital of Nebraska. At 4th and Douglas the town keeps what it calls the world's largest shamrock, set right into the pavement, and every March neighbors gather to give it a fresh coat of Irish green. St. Patrick's week brings Irish Walk of Fame inductions, a Shamrock Fun Run that starts at St. Patrick's Church, and a parade with O'Neill's own washboard band. Since 2022 a statue of the General, sculpted by Herb Mignery, has stood on the Holt County lawn to watch over it all.
