About Oakland
Oakland began in 1866, when Norwegian settler John Oak and his wife, Inger, moved into an abandoned cabin in the Logan Creek valley and helped the families who followed file their homestead claims; the town and its 1868 post office were named in his honor. More settlers followed, Lutheran and Baptist congregations formed in 1869, and when the railroad was coming the town picked up and moved to its present site in 1879, incorporating on April 13, 1881. A. E. Wells helped create the 40-acre city park along Logan Creek in 1921, and a few years later Oakland laid out one of the first golf courses in northeast Nebraska. Downtown, red Dala horses hang from the light poles, a white steepled former church now holds the Swedish Heritage Center, and the brick City Auditorium on Oakland Avenue hosts craft shows and musicals. Families love the Troll Stroll, a woodchip trail through the trees dotted with about two dozen trolls made by Oakland-Craig students, and the town proudly carries the title "Swedish Capital of Nebraska."
