About Oelwein
Oelwein got its start in 1872, when a town was platted in a cornfield bought from pioneer settler Gustav Oelwein just as the railroad arrived, and the two streets that divide the town still carry the names of his sons, Frederick and Charles. In 1892 the Chicago Great Western chose Oelwein as the center of its system, and when its locomotive and car repair shops opened in 1899 where four lines came together, the town grew into the 'Hub City' of northeast Iowa. The rail work drew newcomers from far away, including Italian families who made Oelwein one of the few Italian settlements in the state, a heritage still honored with bocce, a food stand and a banquet on Italian Heritage Day. Downtown, the brick Hotel Mealey went up during that railroad boom in 1898, and near the Hub City Heritage railway museum a Chicago Great Western diesel locomotive, restored by Transco workers on their own time, recalls the shop-city days. Today families swim at the aquatic center in Wings Park, camp and paddle on Lake Oelwein in City Park, catch touring shows at the 800-seat Williams Center for the Arts, and gather the first Friday of December for Olde Tyme Christmas with Santa, carolers and a lighted parade.
