About Ogallala
Ogallala grew up beside the Union Pacific tracks, and from about 1870 to the mid-1880s it was where the Texas trail herds ended their long drive north, with cattlemen from Texas, Wyoming and Montana striking deals in its hotel and saloons each summer. That trail-town past is kept close today: Boot Hill, the town's first burial ground, still sits on its windswept rise north of the old settlement, and Front Street's Crystal Palace Revue has brought cowboys and singing girls back to the stage every summer since 1964. Nine miles north lies Lake McConaughy, Nebraska's largest reservoir, held back by Kingsley Dam since 1941, and each September the town gathers downtown at Rendezvous Square for the Indian Summer Rendezvous.
