About Onawa
Onawa was platted in 1857 on the Missouri River bottomlands and took its name from a character in Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha; a year later it became the Monona County seat, and the railroad reached town in 1867. The town grew with a main street so broad that Onawa is known for having the widest one in the continental United States. In 1920 a local shop owner, Chris Nelson, worked out how to coat a brick of ice cream in chocolate, and the treat he invented went national as the Eskimo Pie. Neighbors still gather beneath landmarks from those years: the 1892 Romanesque courthouse, the IOOF Opera House, and a Prairie School library that a Carnegie grant and Judge Addison Oliver's gifts built in 1909. Today about 2,900 people call Onawa home, at the edge of the Loess Hills and a short drive from Blue Lake at Lewis and Clark State Park.
