About Orange City
In 1869 a small party of Dutch families from Pella rode some 300 miles northwest looking for cheaper, richer land, and when they reached the Sioux County prairie they decided this was the place, first calling their town site Holland and soon renaming it Orange City for the Dutch royal house. They set aside a block for a public park and a share of their land sales for a college fund, organized First Reformed Church in 1871, and by 1872 had brought the county seat here; a decade later the Northwestern Classical Academy opened, growing into today's Northwestern College. The red sandstone Sioux County Courthouse, finished in 1904, still keeps watch over the square with its six-story clock tower and a bronze statue of Justice on top. Since 1936 the town has thrown its Tulip Festival every May, with Dutch costumes, street scrubbing and a Dutch street organ, and in October volunteers gather in Windmill Park to plant tens of thousands of bulbs for next spring. Today about 6,300 people live here among Dutch-gabled storefronts, scale-model windmills and a December Sinterklaas Dag that keeps the old traditions close.
