About Osage
Osage got its start in the mid-1850s, when a first plat called Cora gave way to a town renamed for Orrin Sage, a Massachusetts banker whose gifts of money and land helped start its library. Dr. S. B. Chase laid out the present streets in 1856, naming the east-west ones for trees and planting maples along them, which is why people still call Osage the City of Maples. As the Mitchell County seat it grew around a 100-foot-wide Main Street, and four blocks of its brick storefronts from the late 1800s and early 1900s are now on the National Register. Cedar Valley Seminary, the 1869 Baptist academy where Hamlin Garland once studied, was rolled to a new corner in 2016 to become a community gathering place, and the Watts Theatre has been showing movies downtown since 1950. Today about 3,600 people live here, swimming and working out at the Cedar River Complex and picnicking by the spring at Spring Park on the Cedar River.
