About Osceola
Osceola got its start in August 1851, when three county commissioners picked this rise of land for Clarke County's seat and bought it from George W. How for one hundred dollars. The square at its heart has been rebuilt again and again: dozens of fires swept downtown from 1874 on, and each time merchants came back with brick, wider gaps between buildings and cornices tucked out of the flames' reach. The 1872 Italianate Masonic Building still anchors the square, the 1956 courthouse sits in the middle of it, and the water tower raised west of the square in 1957 to fight those fires still watches over it. Down on Main Street the Burlington railroad's 1907 Prairie-style brick depot, carefully restored and reopened in 2016, keeps the California Zephyr stopping here daily, and passengers can read the big OSCEOLA letters from the train window. Since 2018 the downtown has been on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2026 the town is marking 175 years with markets, Halloween on the square and Christmas in the Park.
