About Oshkosh
Oshkosh grew from cattle country: in 1885 Henry Gumaer and John Robinson of the Oshkosh Land and Cattle Company, some of its men from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, drove the first herd onto the grass just north of the North Platte River, near the old Oregon Trail. By 1889 there was a post office and a two-story building on Main Street that held the general store and the hotel. The railroad arrived in 1908, the town became seat of the new Garden County a year later, and in 1921-22 the county built its Classical Revival courthouse at F and Main. Summer visitors still step into the 1905 Rock School and the 1906 Silver Hill opera house, both now Garden County Historical Society museums, and the town library that began in 1921 with 50 books now holds about 10,000 items in City Hall. Today about 800 people live here, the Garden County Eagles fill the school calendar, and murals, metal sculptures and barn quilts have made Oshkosh a certified Nebraska Creative District.
