About Overton
Overton grew up beside the Union Pacific tracks after the railroad pushed west across the Platte Valley, and its first settlers arrived in 1873. Starting in 1879, Black Canadian families from the Elgin Settlement in Ontario, among them the Robinsons, Greens, Walkers and Meehans, came to homestead and farm the land around town. Photographer Solomon Butcher caught a busy Overton grocery in 1904, and the little brick Bank of Overton on C Street, trimmed in cream stone with a double clock out front, became a downtown landmark. In 1955 the Plectron company started here, building the alert radios that called volunteer firefighters to duty. Today about 600 neighbors live along U.S. Highway 30, where tall grain elevators and the water tower rise over the long trains, and the Overton Eagles fill the school with concerts, one-act plays and ball games.
