About Oxford
Oxford took shape in 1880, the year the railroad pushed up the Republican River valley to this spot, and the village has sat astride the Furnas and Harlan county line ever since. The tracks shaped everything that followed: in the 1950s the streamlined California Zephyr and Denver Zephyr rolled through town with dining cars and sleepers, and today the Museum of Oxford, in the old school building on Central, sets a Zephyr dining-car table with real railroad china and remembers the deadly Republican River flood of 1935. Along Ogden Street, the volunteer-run Granada Theater still opens its single screen every weekend, right next door to the public library. The American Legion hall began life as a building at Camp Atlanta, the World War II prisoner-of-war camp near Atlanta, Nebraska, and in 2018 neighbors gave mostly five-, ten- and twenty-dollar donations to raise the Oxford Area Veterans Memorial, with 289 names carved in stone. About 700 people live here now, gathering for Turkey Days each June, for meals at the Golden Generation Center and in the stands for the Southern Valley Eagles.
