About Palmer
Palmer got its start in the 1880s, when the Lincoln and Black Hills Railroad came through northwestern Merrick County and a village rose beside the tracks, named for railroad official H. E. Palmer. It sits a couple of miles north of Highway 92, a dozen miles east of St. Paul, with the Loup River only four miles away. Grain elevators still stand over the village and Commercial Street holds its storefronts, village hall and the school, which anchors the town's Friday nights. The village grew to about 750 people by 1990 and keeps close to 440 neighbors today, who describe their home as a place of small-town values and shared heritage.
