About Palo
Palo got its name from a post office, not the other way round. In 1849 a Marion doctor named Bardwell christened the regional office just after news of the Battle of Palo Alto, and when the town was surveyed in 1854 it borrowed the short name. Sitting on the Cedar River's edge near Pleasant Creek State Recreation Park, it has grown into a small town of about 1,400 neighbors in the Cedar Rapids area. In the 2008 flood the whole town was asked to leave, and Palo came back.
