About Parkersburg
Parkersburg traces its start to 1857, when John Connell and his son William put up a log cabin on the Butler County prairie; a railroad depot followed in 1865, and the new town took the name of Pascal P. Parker, a leading settler and its first postmaster. It incorporated in 1874, rebuilt its school and much of its business district after the great fire of October 1893, and by 1895 banker Charles Wolf had finished a brick Victorian home with a three-story corner tower that neighbors later saved from the wrecking ball and still open for summer tours as the Parkersburg Historical Home. Pauline Pfeiffer, who spent her early childhood in the Italianate Netcott-Pfeiffer House on Buswell Street, went on to become a journalist and the second wife of Ernest Hemingway. After an EF5 tornado tore through the south side of town in May 2008, residents and volunteers rebuilt homes, a new high school and a playground now called Miracle Park, and Parkersburg is held up today as a model of recovery. About 2,000 people live here, the largest town in Butler County, with the old depot and a caboose at Depot Park, an all-inclusive Miracle League diamond at the All-Play Ball Park, a six-lane city pool, two golf courses and the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons on Friday nights.
