About Pawnee City
Pawnee City was chosen as the seat of Pawnee County on November 4, 1856, laid out the next spring and incorporated in 1858, taking its name from the Pawnee people. By the 1880s two railroad lines met here, and when a fire on August 9, 1881 wiped out about two-thirds of downtown, merchants rebuilt around the square in fireproof brick; that business district is now on the National Register, and the library hands out maps for a self-guided walk. The tan-brick Pawnee County Courthouse of 1911 anchors the square with a four-column portico whose terra cotta pediment shows farmers with a shovel and pitchfork beside women carrying apples and produce, and the 1908 Carnegie library and the 1941 post office, home to Kenneth Evett's mural 'The Auction', stand a short walk away. On the east edge of town the Historical Society keeps more than 20 buildings, among them six country schools, a log cabin and the home of David Butler, Nebraska's first governor, while Jerry's Dream Museum in a restored 1937 Phillips 66 station and the Pedal Clinic's 450-plus pedal cars add some fun. Today about 865 people call Pawnee City home, golfing the Fairview course that opened in 1922 and packing the stands on Friday nights.
