About Paxton

Paxton started as a railroad siding called Alkali on the Union Pacific, with a telegraph station, water tower and depot; Edwin Searle Sr. came out as an 18-year-old telegraph operator in 1867. Cattle ranching followed the buffalo, and Omaha rancher William A. Paxton lent his name when the town was renamed and incorporated in 1885. Methodist and Catholic churches arrived within two years, and the Globe Hotel became the gathering place for railroad men and travelers. The Lincoln Highway later ran straight through, and Kingsley Dam and new water systems helped farmers through the hard 1930s. Ole's, opened in 1933, is still the town's best-known stop, with more than 200 big game trophies on its walls. Today about 500 people call Paxton home.
