About Pella

Pella began in the summer of 1847, when roughly 800 Dutch religious dissenters followed Dominie Hendrik Scholte to the rolling ground between the Des Moines and Skunk Rivers and named their new home after an ancient city of refuge. Central College followed in 1853, and over the next century families, churches and makers such as Pella Corporation and Vermeer grew the settlement into a town of more than 10,000. The Dutch story is told everywhere downtown: a 1900 opera house on Franklin Street, the Klokkenspel whose figures act out local history, and the Vermeer Windmill, a working grain mill built in the Netherlands and raised here in 2002. Every May since 1935, Tulip Time fills the square with tulips, wooden shoes, costumes and daily parades. Today Pella is a college town and a factory town with Lake Red Rock just to the west, still proud to wear its heritage on its sleeve.
