About Pender
Pender was started in April 1885 by W. E. Peebles on a high, level stretch of prairie just west of Logan Creek, and it took its name from Sir John Pender, the Scottish businessman behind the transatlantic telegraph cable who also sat on the board of the railroad through town. When Thurston County was organized in 1889, Pender was its first town and became the county seat, a job it has held ever since. Its first courthouse was a plain two-story frame store on Main Street, next to the three-story brick Peebles House hotel from 1892, and in 1927 the county moved into a handsome 1895 brick schoolhouse that still serves as the courthouse. Folks once came downtown for plays and dances at the Opera House, which still stands on Main Street, and for movies at the Thelma Theatre. Today about 1,100 people call Pender home, with a park and swimming pool, the Twin Creeks golf course, an eight-lane bowling alley, and a Community Center beside the Veterans Park Memorial.
