About Peosta
Peosta carries the name of a Meskwaki leader who was a close friend of Julien Dubuque, the first European settler in the area, and a post office opened here in 1858. Just outside town, Irish Trappist monks had already founded New Melleray Abbey in 1849, and after the Civil War they raised a Gothic Revival stone monastery drawn by Dubuque architect John Mullany, where monks still pray, garden and build caskets today. For most of its life Peosta was a quiet crossroads of about a hundred people, but a four-lane U.S. 20 in the 1960s, the 1979 opening of the technical institute that became Northeast Iowa Community College, and a busy industrial park in the 1990s changed everything. The town grew from 128 people in 1990 to 1,908 in 2020, and its young families now fill Peosta Elementary, the Peosta Community Centre and NICC's largest campus. Two water towers, one an old lattice tower painted with the town's name, mark the spot from the highway.
