About Perry
Perry was platted in 1869 near the North Raccoon River and took its name from a Colonel Perry of Keokuk, one of the backers of the railroad coming through. Rails and the farms around them filled a busy downtown, and in 1904 an Andrew Carnegie grant gave the town an L-shaped brick library fitted onto a triangle of public land, where it still welcomes visitors as the Carnegie Library Museum. In 1913 the Pattee brothers opened a three-story hotel on Willis Avenue in their father's honor; after decades of owners and remodels, a former Perry resident and her husband restored it, and it reopened in 1997 with every room decorated around the people and traditions of the region. A few blocks away, the limestone bell tower of St. Patrick's Catholic Church has watched over town since 1902. Today close to 7,800 people call Perry home, the Raccoon River Valley Trail and its new link to the High Trestle Trail run right through Uptown, and on the first Saturday of every February riders pedal to Rippey and back, whatever the weather, as they have since 1978.
