About Peru

Settlers from Peru, Illinois, first tried to put down roots here in 1853, and in 1857 they laid out a town by the Missouri River and named it after home. A Methodist academy on the bluff grew into Nebraska's first normal school in 1867, training teachers for the young state, and today Peru State College and its Campus of a Thousand Oaks still crown the hill. The town once canned, pressed cider, made bricks and milled flour, and southeast Nebraska's apple orchards thrived until the Armistice Day freeze of 1940. When the Missouri threatened to flood Peru in 1943, neighbors pulled together to hold it back, and Old Man River Days still celebrates that spirit every June. Visitors walk or bike the Steamboat Trace Trail toward Nebraska City and Brownville, watch for bald eagles at the Peru Bottoms, and stroll the brick storefronts of 5th Street.
