About Plainview
William B. Chilvers was the first to settle near today's Plainview, around 1871, and a post office opened the next year under the name Roseville, after its first postmaster, Charles Rose. In 1874 Christian Lerum suggested a new name, borrowed from Plainview, Minnesota, and fitting for the open plains all around. When the railroad reached the spot in 1880 the town was platted beside its new depot, with about 80 settlers, two churches, two general stores and a hotel; that same depot now holds the Plainview Historical Museum. Later came a Prairie-style Carnegie library in 1916-17 and, from 1939 to 1942, a gleaming white WPA band shell of cast concrete that still hosts summer concerts. Today about 1,300 people live here, proud to call Plainview the Klown Kapital, with a Klown Doll Museum, Klown Days every June, and the distinction of being the first Nebraska city wired with fiber to every home and business.
