About Platteville

Platteville began in 1827 as the Platte River Digs, a camp of lead miners led by John H. Rountree, whose mine gave up more than 5 million pounds of lead ore. Its streets still bend and jog where the surveyors had to steer around old mine shafts and a steep creek ravine. When mining faded, the town kept going as a school town: an academy opened in 1853, a teachers' school in 1866 and a mining school in 1908, and they grew into today's University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Students built the giant whitewashed stone M on the Platte Mound in 1937, and it is still lit each fall. Families come downtown for Hometown Festival Week in July and Dairy Days in September, with a Main Street parade, a cattle show and tractor pulls.
