About Pleasanton

Pleasanton grew up where the South Loup River bends through south central Nebraska, first as Peters' Bridge, a stop on the stagecoach and freight road north, and then as Riverview, whose post office opened in 1883. The village was platted in April 1890 when a railroad branch reached the river, and the first scheduled train rolled in on March 1 of that year. Floods and fires tested it early, and an ice jam that backed the river into the schoolhouse in 1907 sent the school up the hill, where a brick building went up in 1909. The 1890 railroad depot in the middle of town was nearly torn down in 2005, until the high school's business club spent eight years of grants and fundraisers saving it. Today about 360 people live here, twenty miles north of Kearney, with a Pre-K through 12 school, two parks, ball fields, and a big volunteer fire and EMT crew.
