About Pleasantville
Pleasantville was laid out on August 1, 1849, on William Wesley Jordan's land, a tract that had once traded hands for a single horse and thirty dollars. Two decades later the school district and the Masonic Lodge went in together on a three-story brick building that taught children until 1992, and the town voted to incorporate in 1872. When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line came through in 1879, Pleasantville became a busy shipping stop between Knoxville and Des Moines. On the downtown square the City Hall keeps company with the 1896 fire and curfew bell, restored for the Bicentennial, and a block away stands the Webb Shadle Library, founded in 1955 with Cora Shadle's gift in memory of her son. Today about 1,700 people live here, 25 miles southeast of Des Moines and a short drive from Lake Red Rock, with a grain elevator, a top-rated school and Smokey Row Coffee's home office in town.
