About Pocahontas
Pocahontas started as a hundred acres of open prairie: on November 4, 1870, Warrick and Buelah Price of Cleveland, Ohio, had the Village of Pocahontas Center surveyed, naming Main Street for Buelah and the four diagonal streets for their daughters, with a big square set aside in the middle for a courthouse and park. There wasn't a single resident or tree yet, and the first family to stay for good, Wenzel Hubel's, moved into a little land office south of the square in 1872. Bohemian settlers built Saints Peter and Paul Church in 1882, and the railroad (1900), a waterworks and an electric plant soon followed, along with the 1923 courthouse that still anchors the square. Today a 25-foot statue of the Princess welcomes everyone at Princess Park on Highway 3, the renovated Rialto Theater shows movies on Main Street, and the town threw a three-day 155th birthday party in July 2025 that drew more than a thousand people.
