About Polk City
Polk City started as the Big Creek Settlement in the 1840s. George and Hester Beebe were among the families who stopped on their way west, built a mill by the creek, and in 1850 gave land for a town square that people still gather on. The town nearly became the Polk County seat in 1857, but that went to Fort Des Moines. In 1875 the 630 residents incorporated and named the city after President James K. Polk. Its two-story walnut schoolhouse from 1863 has been City Hall since 1894 and also holds the Big Creek Historical Society's museum, while the 1883 bandstand on the square was restored in 1997 and is still the heart of Four Seasons Festival weekend. Now home to about 5,500 people, Polk City sits between Saylorville Lake and Big Creek State Park, with a library built in 2005, Fall Fest on the square, and Light Up Polk City on the first Friday of December.
