About Ponca
Ponca was founded in 1856, which makes it the fourth-oldest town in Nebraska, and it carries the name of the Ponca people who lived along this stretch of the Missouri River long before settlers came. It became a village in 1871, and when the Covington, Columbus and Black Hills Railroad reached town in 1876 the county seat began to grow. Many of its brick blocks still line Third Street in the Ponca Historic District, near the Dixon County Courthouse, whose 1880s Italianate wing sits beside a 1940 Art Deco addition, and C. O. Cook's 1901 blacksmith shop, which the historical society keeps working as a living-history museum with its original tools. Just north of town, Ponca State Park, begun in 1934 on land donated through the local American Legion post and built out by the Civilian Conservation Corps, climbs wooded bluffs to the Three State Overlook above the river. Today about 900 neighbors gather for the Days of '56 Rodeo each June, Frog Days alumni weekend in August and the fall Expo at the park.
