About Postville
Postville started with a single log building: in June 1843 the millwright Joel Post and his wife Zeruiah hauled the army's old Half-Way House, a rest stop between Fort Crawford and Fort Atkinson, to what is now the corner of Front and Maple, and ran it as a tavern for soldiers and teamsters. When a post office opened there in 1849 it took the family's name, and Zeruiah went on to buy the land that became the town. German families settled the rise they called Cabbage Hill, but once the McGregor and Western Railroad arrived in 1864, grain elevators and brick stores moved down by the tracks and Postville incorporated in 1873. In 1914 the local Turn Verein built Turner Hall, a two-story brick hall on East Greene Street where townspeople later packed in to hear Postville's own John R. Mott, the future Nobel Peace Prize winner; it served as city hall for fifty years and is still the town's community center. Since the late 1980s, new neighbors from around the world have come to work in Postville's plants, and the town calls itself the Hometown to the World. Today about 2,500 people live in this four-county corner of northeast Iowa, home of the Postville Pirates, the Big Four Fair and a library that local women first organized in 1911.
