About Prairie City
Prairie City got its start in 1856, when James Elliott laid out a town that first carried his own name, until a second Elliott elsewhere in Iowa forced a new one; the very first settler, William Means, had already opened a tavern a couple of miles west of Elliott's cabin. The railroad reached town in 1866 and a first schoolhouse followed in 1868, and the Plainsmen kept their own district until joining Monroe's in 1991 to form PCM, home of the Mustangs. Downtown still has its two-story brick and stone business blocks, the grain elevators and the blue water tower rise over Highway 163, and the historical museum on South Main keeps the Dowden potato digger that was once built right here. Just beyond town lie the restored tallgrass hills of the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, with bison, elk and the Prairie Learning Center. Today about 1,700 people call Prairie City home, a short drive from Des Moines, gathering each June for Prairie Days and at the library on Marshall Street for storytime and book club.
