About Prospect Hill

The hill was likely named for the 1849 gold prospectors who passed it on the trail west, and it was the most prominent rise travelers saw after crossing the Missouri. Moses Shinn set aside ten acres for a burial ground in 1858, and Byron Reed bought the land, named it Prospect Hill and cared for it at his own expense for more than twenty years.
