About Randolph

Randolph began as a land speculation: in 1886 the Northern Nebraska Land Improvement Company started selling lots once word came that the Omaha road would lay track northwest from Wayne toward Niobrara, and the new town took its name from the British statesman Lord Randolph Churchill. Homesteader Frank Whitney had already staked out raw prairie here in 1880, and by 1887 there was a lumberyard, a post office, a hotel with a 110-foot well and windmill, and a small frame schoolhouse; a second railroad along the north edge of town followed in 1890. Randolph incorporated in 1889, organized a volunteer fire department in 1901, and lit its streets in 1905, and the cemetery on the hill above town was laid out in a circle around a soldier monument. The Woman's Club's donated books grew into a Carnegie library that opened in 1918, and in 2007 the community raised more than $300,000 for the new Lied Randolph Public Library, with schoolchildren passing the books over in a human chain. Today about 880 people live in this farm town in the southwest corner of Cedar County, which calls itself the Honey Capital of the Nation for its many beekeeping families, and they gather at the 1939 city auditorium, the community-built golf course and Veterans Memorial Park to cheer on the Cardinals.
