About Ravenna
In 1874 Erastus Smith brought his family and his cattle from Iowa to a homestead near where the Loup and Beaver rivers meet, picking the spot because he expected a railroad to come. It did: the Burlington chose his land for a division point, a townsite company bought most of the section, and in June 1886 the new town was platted with streets named for cities in Italy, the country of its namesake, Ravenna. The first Burlington run left Ravenna on July 1, 1886, and the booming town was incorporated that October 12. Schooling began even earlier, in Mrs. Smith's sod house in 1875, and the Bluejays still talk about their 1968 football team, which went undefeated without giving up a point. Today about 1,400 people call Ravenna home; the Highway 68 overpass looks down Grand Avenue to downtown, a new library opened in 2018, a century after the first, and every June the town throws Annevar, its own name spelled backwards.
