About Red Cloud
Long before homesteaders came, this stretch of the Republican Valley was Pawnee and Otoe hunting country; then in 1870 Silas Garber and a handful of settlers filed claims along Crooked Creek, and the next year the new town, named for the Oglala leader Red Cloud, won the county seat in a vote held in Garber's dugout. The Burlington main line arrived in 1879, eight passenger trains a day stopped at the depot, and brick and stone two-story blocks soon replaced the first log and frame stores along Webster Street. In 1883 a nine-year-old Willa Cather moved to town, sat in the audience and on the stage of the 1885 Opera House, and later turned Red Cloud's people and streets into six of her novels. Her childhood home on Cedar Street, the red-painted Burlington Depot and the arcaded 1914 Webster County Courthouse still stand, and the restored Opera House and Moon Block now form the National Willa Cather Center. Today fewer than a thousand people call Red Cloud home, and they keep its brick streets busy with concerts, a Halloween parade and a holiday Light the Night market.
